The Carroll Homestead Details

Unlike most of Acadia's sights and trails, this one focuses on man, not nature. The Carroll Homestead, also known as "The Mountain House, was built at the base of Dog Mountain and was home to four generations of the Carroll family between 1825 and 1917. Members of this fascinating family worked as sea captains, masons, school teachers, and factory workers while still maintaining the homestead's orchards, crops, and livestock. The Carroll Homestead was later converted to a summer home, then donated to Acadia National Park in 1982. The house is only occasionally open to the public, but the self-guided interpretive trail provides insight into the lives of a coastal Maine family in the 1800s.
