Walker Party (T4) Details

Joseph Walker is known to be the first Euro-American to enter the Yosemite region and lead a party of explorers to the brink of Yosemite's cliffs. Walker was also the first Euro-American to see the giant sequoias, and most likely the Merced Grove of Giant Sequoias. He wrote: "In the last two days traveling, we have found some trees of the Redwood species, incredibly large - some of which would measure from 16 to 18 fathom round the trunk at the height of a man's head from the ground." The Walker Party is thus credited as the (Euro-American) discoverers of both the Yosemite Valley and the Sequoia gigantea (giant sequoia). Look for the interpretive plaque here. Roadside marker: T4
