Logging Railroad (W6) Details

The emergency fire road you see here today was once part of an extensive logging railway operated by the Yosemite Lumber Company. Shay locomotives transported cars full of Sugar Pines along over 25 miles of track across the Henness Ridge. Today, this area is a small resort community known as Yosemite West. The community is not subject to strict Park limitations on development. There are permanent residents as well as a number of homes, apartments, condos, and bed & breakfast establishments that are available as rentals for National Park visitors. Roadside marker: W6
