Chinquapin (W5) Details

The Sierra Chinquapin (Chrysolepis sempervirens) is a shrub related to the American chestnut and grows spiny seeds. It is commonly found in this area. Chinquapin was once the site of the second ski area within Yosemite. After the Wawona Tunnel was built, the ski area in Yosemite Valley at Ski Hill/Glacier Moraine moved here. Eventually the ski area at Chinquapin closed and was moved to the present day location at Badger Pass. The restrooms located here are open year-round. Roadside marker: W5
