Middle Mississippi River National Wildlife Refuge Details

The Middle Mississippi National Wildlife Refuge comprises of seven separate divisional areas along the Mississippi River. In 1993, the dam and other water systems that were initially put in place were destroyed during a flood. The water barriers were not repaired and today are no longer regulating the river like most of the surrounding floodplains. Because of this, the uneven water levels in the region often cause waterlogging and actually contribute to the health of the ecosystem.
