Modoc Rock Shelter Details

This rocky bluff may not look like much at first glance, but it Is historical importance dates back over 9,000 years. Because of its unique undercut shape (which was carved by floods during the Ice Age), this rock was used to provide shelter to Native American tribes that live in the area. However, Native Americans were the only people who took refuge under the rock. Archeologists have also found artifacts that showed habitation from three distinctly different periods. Hammers, scrapers, and bone awls are just a few of the items that have been excavated, which means it was likely that hunters and European settlers also took refuge here.
