The Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge was established to provide a home for waterfowl in the San Luis Valley. Diverse wetland habitats are scattered throughout the 14,800-acre refuge, providing a home to mallards, pintails, teal, Canada geese, American avocets, killdeer, white-faced ibis, egrets, and herons. Visitors can explore the refuge during a four-mile auto-tour route, or on a walkable nature trail, and can take a hunting trip in the vast wetlands.
