Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area is a meandering green oasis amid the sprawl of urban and suburban Atlanta, Ga. The park protects 48 miles of the Chattahoochee River from the Buford Dam to the city limits and provides opportunities for hiking, boating, fishing, biking, horseback riding, and wildlife viewing. Some hiking trailheads begin at the park headquarters at the Island Ford area - a popular put-in spot for kayakers and canoes, and one of 15 units of the park sprinkled along the river. Other highlights of the 9,200-acre park include mountain biking at Sope Creek, and the wetlands boardwalk and fitness trail at Cochran Shoals, and Lake Sidney Lanier, the upriver beginning of the park. The Chattahoochee River is stocked with trout and has 23 species of game fish to cast after.
