Montezuma Castle National Monument Details
Arizona's starkly beautiful Verde Valley was probably a much greener place when the Sinagua people -- ancestors of the Hopi -- built the towering masonry dwelling known as Montezuma's Castle in the side of a cliff around 700 A.D. Five stories high, the building served to protect some of the thousands of valley residents from the elements as well as providing an alternative to living in the flood plain of Beaver Creek, where crops were raised. Visitors cannot enter the structure but can get a closeup look on a short loop trail. Eleven miles to the north is Montezuma's Well, where water flowing steadily from limestone has been used for irrigation for thousands of years; visitors can see additional cliff dwellings here, as well.
