John Muir National Historic Site Details
America's most acclaimed naturalist, John Muir played foundational roles in the Sierra Club and the National Park Service and was instrumental in the establishment of some of the jewels of the National Park system, including Yosemite, Grand Canyon, Sequoia, and Kings Canyon. The John Muir National Historic Site preserves the 14-room Italianate Victorian mansion in Martinez, Calif., where Muir lived, and of course no park dedicated to Muir would be complete without a place to enjoy nature: across the street from the house is Mount Wanda, 325 acres of woods and grasslands once belonging to the Muir family. It is open for hiking and nature study and includes a one-mile hike to the 580-foot summit. Visitors can take ranger-led or self-guided tours of the Muir house, see a film about Muir's life, stroll the grounds with a cell-phone tour, and peruse exhibits at the Martinez Adobe, including information on the Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail, which traces the path of a 1775 Spanish exploration of the California coast.
