Eugene O'Neill National Historic Site Details
The Danville, Calif., home of Nobel Prize winning playwright has been preserved to honor the man who wrote some of the 20th century's most memorable plays, including The Iceman Cometh and Long Day's Journey Into Night. O'Neill and his fourth wife, Carlotta Monterey, lived in the hillside Tao House when he wrote both plays, between 1937 and 1944 -- works that turned out to be among his last as well as his best. Visits to the Eugene O'Neill Historic Site are by advanced reservation only except on Saturdays, when it's first-come, first-served. The guided, two-hour tours begin in Danville, where visitors are bussed to Tao House, one of the few places where the restless O'Neill spent any significant part of his lifetime. Each spring and fall, O'Neill plays are staged at the property's old barn. Hikers can access the park from trails originating in the surrounding Las Trampas Regional Wilderness.
