The Fort Ord National Monument was previously a U.S. Army post from 1917 to 1994. Many soldiers who served in the Vietnam War went through their training at this site. The land, located on Monterey Bay in California, has been repurposed and now features an outdoor classroom, 86 miles of trails, and an array of plant and animal life, including endangered species such as Smith's blue butterfly. It was officially designated a national monument in 2012.
