Malakoff Diggins State Historic Park Details

Learn more about the history of the California gold rush with a visit to this park. It is home to the Malakoff mine pit, the largest hydraulic gold mine in the state. During the mid to late 1800s, miners would use giant water jets to blast the side of the mountains in search of gold. This technique understandably became illegal in 1884, therefore shutting down the mine and the lively town settlement with it. The mining pit is unfenced and open to visitors of the 865-acre park. Adventurous hikers can enter the 556-foot tunnel where the mining operations once took place. Other nature trails also lead around the park for those who prefer to remain out in the open.
