Baker Mountain Details
Although there are two possible way of ascending this southernmost summit of the Never Summer Mountains, the most popular departs from Holzwarth Historic Site, and climbs over 4 gentle miles up along the hillside to a crossing with Grand Ditch and the drainage headwaters at Baker Gulch Crossing before beginning the steeper ascent to the summit. The trail is seldom used, and therefore much more secluded than many others in this area of the park, making it a perfect trail for both day and overnight hikes. It climbs out of the Kawuneeche Valley through lodgepole pines, aspen, and spruce, to the higher exposed meadows that are home to many elk, deer, and Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep, often opening up for spectacular vistas of the Cloud Range and the Indian Peaks. The Never Summer Range is notorious for poor weather conditions, so it is imperative to plan ahead for adverse weather.
