Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Details
Union Gen. William T. Sherman's famous (or infamous, if you are from the South) march to the sea during the U.S. Civil War effectively broke the back of the rebellion, splitting the Confederacy in half and laying waste to its heartland, including the city of Atlanta. Desperate to halt Sherman's advance, Confederate troops confronted the Union army in a series of clashes around Kennesaw Mountain, Ga., in the summer of 1864. The outnumbered Confederates dug into strongly prepared defensive positions but were ultimately driven off, and Sherman's Atlanta Campaign continued, shortly to be followed by the March to the Sea. Visitors to 2,923-acre Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park can tour a museum and the battlefield, the latter via a driving route marked by interpretive exhibits or by hiking trails. Still visible reminders of the battle include trenches and the site of gun emplacements. A road to the top of the mountain is open to private vehicles during the week, with travel limited to park shuttles on weekends.
