Avalanche Peak Trail Details
Maintained by the Sierra Club, this "unofficial," but well-maintained trail is one of the best late-summer hikes in the eastern corner of the park. Covered in snow until late July, this narrow trail steeply ascends 2,100-feet in a dense fir and spruce forest, using a number of switchbacks as it reaches to 10,566-foot treeless summit. The steepness of the trail, combined with scree, rocks, and other footing hazards, make this trail quite challenging, but the 360 degree views over Yellowstone Lake, Cow Creek Valley, the Teton Range, and everything in between makes for a good reward.
