Malaga Island Preserve Details
Both beautiful to behold and peaceful to visit, the 42 acres of Malaga Island are now used today by recreationists and fishermen. Sitting at the mouth of the New Meadows River and only accessible by boat, the easy mile looping trail is both enjoyable and interpretive, telling the story of a haunting past. Once a mixed-race fishing community during the time that Maine became a desirable tourist hotspot, the islanders were forcibly removed, with some dying or becoming institutionalized. Today nothing but a memorial remains in the old cemetery.
