Presumpscot Falls were once encumbered in their natural flow by the Smelt Hill Dam that controlled this waterway since 1731. Today, the dam is removed for the river to once again flow freely. It is now a conservation area for the beautiful fall it produces and the wildlife it supports. The Presumpscot Falls and Walton Park Trails both provide views of these beautiful falls, with the latter being easier to traverse. The Presumpscot Falls Trail particularly provides for views both above and below the falls but is a more strenuous hike.
