Interestingly, Brickyard Point was not originally the island it is today but was once an actively worked part of the mainland. A total of 14 acres, the wooded peninsula was a brickyard, dating back as far as the 1820s. The clay digging drastically altered the landscape though, and then when Highway I-295 was built, the peninsula was completely cut off. A roughly mile-long trail loop trail around the island now provides for water scaped vistas and views of the Portland skyline. Only accessible by boat, paddlers can put in at Walton Park to reach Brickyard Point. However, the point can only be reached during mid-tide to high tide.
