Sargent Pond Details

This 12,000-year-old pond is a pretty, isolated retreat nestled between the summits of Sargent and Penobscot Mountains. Lined with tall pines, the shallow lake was created during the recession of the glaciers from Mount Desert Island. Legend has it that the glacier cut so deep that it created a bottomless pond, complete with a terrifying serpent in residence. While the pond remains fishless, it has become a popular swimming spot for hikers en route to either summit, but its flat, glassy surface and stunning surroundings make it an excellent destination even without the hike.
