Great Arch Details
The Great Arch is not a freestanding arch, but rather an indentation in the canyon's sandstone walls caused by jointing. It's more of an alcove or recess than an arch -- what's technically called a blind arch. You can see the Great Arch as you negotiate the switchbacks on the Zion-Mount Carmel Highway or by hiking the Pine Creek/Great Arch Overlook Trail at the east end of the Zion-Mt. Carmel Tunnel.
