Jordan Pond House Details
Beautiful and pristine, Jordan Pond is also a major hub of activity in Acadia. Carved by glaciers along with the U-shaped valley it sits in, the pond is 150- feet deep and covers 187 acres. Swimming is prohibited in order to maintain Jordan Pond's exceptional water quality, but boating is allowed. The Jordan Pond Gate Lodge was built in 1932 in French Romanesque Revival style at the point where Acadia's motor roads and carriage roads intersected. See if you can spot such whimsical details as the birdhouses in the garage gable and the letter 'A' carved into the shutters in honor of architect Grosvenor Atterbury. If you pull in to find that the main lot is full, there's an overflow parking lot just past the main Jordan Pond entrance, to the left. Parking is often full from 9am to 4pm, July thru September, so riding the fare-free Island Explorer Shuttle from where you are staying is a great option. Reservations to eat at Jordan Pond House should be made well in advance. At the eatery, you can join in a century-old tradition by enjoying tea and popovers on the upstairs deck or on the lawn overlooking the pond. Delicious lunches and dinners are also served. There's often a wait for the popular afternoon tea -- sometimes up to an hour and a half. One great way you can pass the time is to hike the Jordan Pond Trail, a three-mile loop around the pond that starts at the road leading to the boat ramp. You can also walk behind the tea house or down the boat ramp for an iconic view of the Bubbles, a pair of rounded peaks whose reflection graces the surface of Jordan Pond. If you want a more serious hike, you can access the carriage road system from Jordan Pond. Behind the Jordan Pond Gift Shop -- also worth a visit -- you'll find the trailheads for the Jordan Stream Trail, the Asticou Trail, the Penebscot Mountain Trail, and the Jordan Cliffs Trail.
