Norris Geyser Basin Details
Even among hydrothermal areas, the Norris Geyser Basin is pretty hot. Temperatures of many of the colorful hot springs and fumaroles here exceed the boiling temperature of 200ºF. Acid geysers, rare in the rest of the world, are common here, and Steamboat Geyser is the tallest geyser in the world. Not only is this basin part of one of the world's largest active volcanoes, it also sits atop three major fault lines, so earthquakes are common. The landscape of the basin is always changing as new hot springs and geysers appear. Clear pools can suddenly turn muddy, and geysers can alternative between active and dormant.
