Wellfleet Tavern Details
The Wellfleet Tavern was a gathering place for whalers in the 17th century; it also was known as the Samuel Smith Tavern or the Great Island Tavern. Look for the plaque marking the tavern site; despite the rather desolate location on the Great Island bluffs -- or perhaps because of it -- this was where sailors and their ladies would carouse when the whale ships were back in port after months or years at sea. Archaeologists unearthed the tavern's foundation in 1970, along with more than 24,000 artifacts from the 1600s and 1700s.
