Uncle Jim Point Details
Uncle Jim Point was named for early park game warden James T. Owen, whose dubious approach to his job was to kill more than 500 mountain lions in order to protect the local mule deer population. Predictably, while Owen was leading Teddy Roosevelt and others on big-game hunting expeditions the deer population exploded, with tens of thousands starving to death during the winter of 1924-25. Nonetheless, the overlook that honors "Uncle Jim" is a must-see. At the end of the five-mile Uncle Jim Trail loop on the North Rim you'll be rewarded with outstanding views of Bright Angel Canyon and a section of the North Kaibab Trail. You also may encounter mule trains taking park visitors on excursions along this gentle trail.
