The Precipice Details
From this perch on the steep slope of Champlain Mountain, you'll get a peek at a prime nesting site for Acadia's population of peregrine falcons. These beautiful, but deadly, predators were reintroduced to Acadia in 1987 after being wiped out by DDT. Today, a growing population of falcons nest at the Precipice as well as other mountains in Acadia. Your best odds of seeing nesting falcons are in late spring and early summer. A park ranger may be on hand to help, and you also can use the spotting scopes near the parking lot. If you're here after nesting season ends, the good news is that the cliff side Precipice Trail may be open to hikers.
