Backcountry Information Center Details
If you want to camp anywhere in Grand Canyon National Park other than the developed campgrounds on the North Rim, South Rim, or Tuweep, you'll first need to get a permit from the Backcountry Information Center. Staff at the center, located in Grand Canyon Village, also can answer your questions about exploring the backcountry. The center is open daily from 8 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Permits also are required for overnight hiking, horseback riding, cross-country ski trips, and other overnight activities. Fees are charged for all permits. You should obtain backcountry permits in advance via mail or fax: permits can be requested up to four months in advance. If you don't have one, however, you can apply for a last-minute walk-up permit at the Backcountry Information Center. These permits are issued in person only, are good for one or two consecutive nights, and cannot be purchased more than one day prior to the start of a hike. You can also come to the center to be put on the wait list for a permit to hike or camp the next day.
