Force Crag Mine Details
Although the Lake District mostly represents lovely natural landscapes, the area has also been home to industry for thousands of years, beginning with Roman stone quarries. Lead has been mined in the Coledale valley since Elizabethan times, but large-scale mining began in 1839 at Force Crag Mine. Lead mining gave way to zinc and barite mining, which began as byproducts. Ore was brought to the mine from adits, or nearly horizontal shafts constructed for access or drainage, to be processed in mills on the valley floor. One of the adits remains largely intact. When it closed in 1991, Force Crag was the area's last working metal mine. It's managed by the National Trust, and entry to the site available by bookable tour only. Visitors can park in Braithwaite, then walk a 2.5-mile path up the valley.
