Moose Meadows Details

Though named for the massive animals, you're more likely to see deer in these meadows than moose. This typical moose habitat was once a terrific spot for moose to be seen, during the 1950s and '60s, but these days you're more likely to see deer or elk. Moose Meadows is where the Bow Valley separates from the Front and Main ranges of the Rocky Mountains, resulting in the lush meadow you see before you. You can tell the difference between the Front and Main Ranges by the rocks. The Front Ranges, like the Sawback Range, are lower in elevation, have sloping rock layers and grey colours. These rocks in these ranges is much softer and several million years younger than the main rangers. The high peaks you can see (like Castle Mountain) are most likely in the Main Range. The Main range reveals itself in brown and red colours, and consists of blocky-castle like shapes. It's rocks are in horizontal layers.
