Walla Crag to Ashness Bridge Details

This loop walk in the heights above Derwent Water begins at the parking lot for the Great Wood and almost immediately begins climbing through the forest, opening up for views of Keswick town, Bassenthwaite Lake, and Skiddaw mountain. You'll walk along Brockle Beck and the deep valley carved by the river before summiting Walla Crag to enjoy excellent views of the countryside. The descent is via Lady's Rake, a cleft in the crag that was used by a local countess in the 18th century to flee from anti-Jacobite forces. Close to the end of the trail you'll cross the famously picturesque Ashness Bridge before returning to your starting point in Great Wood.
