Borger Dalr Details
Borger Dalr means "Valley of the Fort" in Old Norse, and Alfred Wainwright considered this area of Borrowdale the most beautiful spot in the Lake District. This National Trust walk, a favorite of geology buffs, includes Peace How, a sanctuary established for returning World War I soldiers, and the impressive remains of Dalt Quarry. The walk begins in the village of Grange; Peace How is the first stop, a knoll sitting just above the Borrowdale Gates Hotel (look for the gate just before you reach the hotel). You'll pass through Hollows Farm and walk alongside the River Derwent before crossing a bridge and ascending to Dalt Quarry. You can choose to summit Castle Crag or visit Millican Daltons cave along the way.
