Gosforth Cross Details

This large stone Viking cross, in St. Mary's churchyard in Gosforth, dates to the first half of the 10th century. Carved with a crucifixion scene, it depicts images from Norse mythology, linking the two belief systems and perhaps used as a tool to help illustrate Christian teachings. At 15 feet high, it's the tallest Viking cross in England. Inside St. Mary's are other Viking fragments: two more crosses, two tomb covers and a decorated stone.
