Nuphar Lake Details
Nuphar Lake is a small lake located at Norris Geyser Basin just off the entry road as you make the first bend after having turned off Grand Loop Road. The lake is named after a genus of yellow pond lilies that was apparently present in 1888 when one of the Hague Expeditions passed through the area. The lilies are no longer present, possibly due to water contamination from the drilling of the nearby Carnegie Borehole (water from the lake was used to cool the drills, then returned to the lake). The Yellowstone Volcano Observatory maintains an ambient air temperature monitor at Nuphar Lake.
