Tall Trees Trail Details
This grove of redwoods famously contains the Libbey Tree, which previously held the title of the world's tallest known living thing. Taller trees have since been discovered, but the Tall Trees grove is still a major attraction. However, it is not easy to reach compared to some of the other old-growth redwood groves. To access this trail, first stop by the Kuchel Information Center and get a free permit, parking pass, and gate combination. This will get you onto the Tall Trees Access Road, a turnoff from Bald Hills Road. Once through the gate, follow the dirt road for six miles to the trailhead parking lot. On foot, descend steeply down to the grove, where the trail winds through clusters of monster trees dispersed throughout a forest of alders, smaller redwoods, and even maples in some places. The north end of the grove, where the Redwood Creek Trail joins, is where some of the enormous trees are on display. The trail does a loop through the grove at the bottom of the valley, depositing you on the same trail on which you came down; now it is time for the climb back up, so save some energy. If you're adventurous and have the time, park at the Redwood Creek Trailhead and hike the eight miles out to Tall Trees Grove and back -- either in one long day or by camping overnight along Redwood Creek.
