McArthur Creek Loop Trail Details
This horse trail also offers great hiking if you're up for a long trek. Starting at the Orick Rodeo Grounds, it snakes through redwood and alder forests, mostly in logged areas but now and then through a patchwork of stunning old growth. There are no especially steep sections of trail, but it can get muddy and overgrown. It is possible to shorten the hike to seven miles by taking the Ridge Loop, also open to horses. The full loop is more of a lollipop shape, climbing and descending the ridges on either side of McArthur Creek twice, with a third ascent and drop back down to the starting point. Don't expect a flat hike, but the grade is very reasonable. You can access Elam Horse Camp from the east side of the McArthur Creek Loop.
