South Fork Trail Details
For a fantastic tour of redwood forest types from lowland to upland, follow this loop hike that connects three trails in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park. Begin at the trailhead at mile marker 129 on Newton B. Drury Parkway (opposite the Prairie Creek Trailhead). Follow the South Fork Trail as it ascends from larger to smaller redwoods, topping out on a ridge. Notice that the shrubs here make up an entirely different landscape than the one form which you emerged. When you reach the intersection with the Rhododendron Trail, turn left and descend into a ravine. Here, the trees get ever larger as you approach Brown Creek. Cross the creek on a bridge and then turn left onto the Brown Creek Trail. You'll notice many tree trunks bleached by the salt air, giving the forest a textured look. Follow the Brown Creek Trail until it ends on the South Fork Trail, and turn right to return to your starting point.
