Hot Springs, S.D. Details

Hot Springs is a gateway to the Black Hills region, with many great lodging options including campgrounds, cabins, vacation-home rentals, and everything in between. You'll have plenty to choose from in terms of dining and shopping, too. With a rich history and diverse recreational opportunities, the town is more than just a stopover on the way to the national park and forest. As the name suggests, the town of Hot Springs was formed around a series of naturally warmed mineral pools. The first white settlers placed roots down in 1879, attracted by the region's prime cattle-grazing lands. In the 1890s, a businessman named Fred Evans decided to turn the town's natural hot springs into a giant spa. Thus began the town's relationship with the tourism industry. The town is also famous for having one of the country's first Veterans Administration hospitals (then called the Battle Mountain Sanitarium) and State Veterans Homes. Today, you can still visit the Evans Plunge Mineral Springs; tour the Pioneer Museum, an old converted schoolhouse with exhibits on pioneer culture and society; the Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary, an 11,000-acre chunk of land that is home to 600 wild mustangs; and Mammoth Site, an active archaeological dig where mammoth bones have been discovered. In the summer you can fish, swim or boat on the Angostura Reservoir, or hike in and around Custer State Park.
