Elliot Key Trail Details
An alternative way to get to Elliott Key is by canoe or kayak, but be forewarned: this is an arduous 17-mile roundtrip, and there's nowhere to rest along the way. Start from the canoe/kayak launch at Convoy Point and be sure to use caution when crossing the channel. Once across the channel, continue east across open water to Elliott Key; you may see manatees or dolphins along the way. Dock in the Elliott Key harbor or at the swimming area. In the open water on your way to Elliott Key, be sure to keep an eye out for birds flying overhead, and perhaps even the occasional manatee or dolphin below the water's surface. You never know what lies just beneath. Of course, enjoying the varying shades of blues and greens in the water can be captivating enough. On the island, you'll find hiking trails, a campground, and bathroom facilities. Safe paddling practices include going with a buddy, filing a float plan so someone knows where you're going and with whom, checking the weather for high winds or storms; carrying extra water, food and sunscreen; and paddling within your experience level. Find a PDF of the trail map on the park's [website](https://www.nps.gov/bisc/planyourvisit/canoeing-and-kayaking.htm).
