Kaymoor Details
Imagine a coal town literally carved into the steep slopes of New River Gorge-welcome to Kaymoor. Perched dramatically within the forested cliffs, Kaymoor was once a hive of industry, where miners toiled along the gorge's rugged walls to fuel America's industrial revolution. Today, it stands as a fascinating ghost town draped in Appalachian greenery, where rusted coke ovens, mining ruins, and moss-covered beams whisper stories of grit, hardship, and endurance. Visitors can explore this historic site via the Kaymoor Trail, an 8.6-mile journey along the gorge rim that offers windows into the past through interpretive signs and scattered relics. But the real challenge (and thrill) lies in the descent down the Kaymoor Miners Trail, where 821 steep steps deliver you straight to the heart of Kaymoor Bottom-an area once bustling with mining operations. Down here, among the remnants of massive conveyor belts and crumbling stone structures, it's easy to imagine the clang of tools and hum of machinery that once filled this canyon. Beyond its industrial allure, Kaymoor rewards hikers with panoramic views of the New River and an eerie, beautiful contrast between man-made structures and the surrounding wilderness. It's one of the park's most immersive hikes-part workout, part historical deep dive.
