Hoh River Trail Details
One of the more popular of Olympic National Park's longer trails, this easy to access trail leaves a vast rainforest behind as it slowly climbs over hillsides marked by the Hoh Lake Fire of 1978, reaches the subalpine shores of Elk Lake, and climbs up the moraine of Blue Glacier, located about halfway up iconic Mount Olympus. Visiting stunning natural landmarks like Lewis Meadow and the Hoh River Valley, the trail offers a chance to see a good variety of ecosystems found on the peninsula, including the spectacular glacier itself. From the trail's terminus on the moraine there are amazing panoramas of stark ice and rock precipices, Mount Mathias, the Snow Dome, and the glacial crevasses and chasms of Blue Glacier. Day hikers can walk the lower sections of the 17.3-mile route to Glacier Meadows, on the shoulder of Mount Olympus. For the whole route, elevation gain is 3,700 feet. An additional 700-foot climb in 0.9 miles leads to the Blue Glacier. Backpackers must obtain a wilderness camping permit. Climbing Mount Olympus requires glacier travel skills and equipment.
