Skagit General Store in historic downtown Newhalem was established in 1922 as supply store for the employees of the Skagit River Hydroelectric Project. The building is now listed in the National Registry of Historic Places. This is the only grocery store in a 30-mile radius; it is open year-round and is across the street from the Newhalem Visitors Information Center. Be sure to try the homemade soups and sandwiches, and of course, the famous fudge.
