Purple Creek /Juanita Lake Trail Details
This challenging trail leads to the high basin between Purple and War Creek Passes, and is a challenging route that offers connections to other backpacking trails. The hike begins near Purple Creek in Stehekin and eventually reaches the low, shallow Juanita Lake, located at 6,000 feet between the two passes. The trail wanders in and out of small groves of ponderosa pine and Douglas fir, but spends most of the time in dry, exposed meadows and a vast area that is recovering from the devastating Flick Creek wildfires of 2006. Purple Pass offers astounding western views of the rows and rows of jagged peaks in the Glacier Peak Wilderness, and is a good place to rest before beginning the descent to the reedy, shallow basin of Juanita Lake. There are two seldom-used but very lovely lakeside campsites that look down over the Fourmile Creek drainage; however, campfires are prohibited to protect this unique environment.
