Trail of the Shadows Details

This .7-mile trail starts across the street from Longmire's National Park Inn. Along the way, you'll see an early homestead cabin and a beaver pond (with signs of beavers), pass through old forests, loop around a bog created by the mineral springs that once drew the first travelers to the area, and learn about the animals and other critters that live here. Pick up a trail guide at the Longmire Museum or the Wilderness Information Center, and head counterclockwise. The trail tells the fascinating story of James Longmire's settlement of the valley. Keep an eye out for beaver dams where the trail comes close to the stream. About half of the trail is accessible to wheelchairs. Trail stats: .7 miles roundtrip; 20 foot elevation gain; 20 minutes.
