The 16-mile-long Ohanapecosh River begins near the Ohanapecosh Glacier on Mount Rainier's southeast side. It serves as the main tributary of the Cowlitz River, which begins where the Ohanapecosh and Clear Fork Cowlitz rivers meet. Some believe that Ohanapecosh, named for a Taidnapam (upper Cowlitz) Indian habitation site along the river, means "standing at the edge."
