Longmire Historic District Walking Tour Details

In 1997, all buildings and manmade structures throughout the park were designated the Mount Rainier National Historic Landmark District. Take this 1.25-mile self-guided walk around Longmire and you will soon discover why: the architecture blends perfectly with the natural landscape. Designers used giant logs and glacial boulders to construct these rustic buildings in the middle of a beautifully preserved wilderness. The Longmire Historic District Walking Tour will take you on an easy stroll along paved paths and roadway to see the historic buildings in this area. Visit the General Store, the National Park Inn, an old-style gas pump, and the administration building, which is home to a relief map of the mountain, the ranger's station and, outside the front door, an old stretch car that once took visitors on a driving tour up to Paradise. Stop by the small but interesting museum, and then wander past a small library, park staff housing, and the Nisqually Suspension Bridge, as you make your way out to a Community Building. As you explore the park on your visit, remember that all manmade structures comprise the historic landmark district, including the buildings at Nisqually, Sunrise, Paradise, White River, and Camp Muir (a camp high up on Rainier's slopes), plus bridges, roads, wilderness structures, and even the Wonderland Trail. Trail stats: 1.25 miles; 1 hour.
