Carbon River Road Details

This historic old road, built in 1921, is located in the northwestern corner of the park and is a spur off of Highway 165. It was closed to vehicle traffic beyond the Carbon River Ranger Station after severe flooding and subsequent damage in 2006. Past the ranger station, the five-mile road is still open to bikers and hikers and provides access to Ipsut Creek Campground, the northern section of the Wonderland Trail, and hikes to the Carbon Glacier. If you want to bike it, you'll need a mountain bike or another type of fat-tired bike due to the gravel surface.
