Mary's Rock Details
Mary's Rock, a 3,514-foot peak, is the eighth-highest summit in the park. The Mary's Rock Trailhead is located at Thornton Gap (mile 31.6 on Skyline Drive); take the short connector trail to the Appalachian Trail south, then follow the AT through several sharp turns and continue until you reach a trail post directing you to the Mary's Rock viewpoint. Return via the same path. You can also reach the Mary's Rock summit from the Meadow Springs Parking Area (mile 32.7 on Skyline Drive). This hike is shorter and less strenuous, at 2.8 miles long and with an elevation gain of 674 feet. The alternate route also allows you to reach the summit from the south, where you'll pass several crags popular for rock climbing and bouldering. From the parking area, cross Skyline Drive and follow the trail half a mile to the Appalachian Trail, where you'll head north. Follow a spur trail to the summit, and retrace your steps to get back to your starting point.
