Sand Bar State Park Details
Once connecting South Hero Island to the town of Milton on the mainland, this natural sand bar is one of the coolest state parks in the state. Thousands of years ago, this sandbar was formed by the Lamoille River as it traveled west, filling in the basin of Lake Champlain. Because of the sandbar, the water near the lake remains incredibly shallow and calm, which is ideal for leisurely swimmers or children. The parks original 10-acres was built in 1933 by the Civilian Conservation Corps. However, the state inherited more land in the 1970s and eventually expanded it to be the 15-acres it is now. Most people spend their time lounging along the 2000-foot long sandy beach, swimming in the warm waters, or kayaking along the shore.
