Torrey Details

Small Torrey, with a population of only 179, is the closest town to Capitol Reef National Park's western entrance, about eight miles away. It's on Hwy. 24 and was established in the 1880s by Mormon settlers, much like the other small towns in the area. Torrey was originally known as Youngtown, named after John Willard Young, son of Brigham Young, but later named for Jay Torrey, a member of the Wyoming legislature. Torrey was also known for proposing the creation of three volunteer cavalry regiments during the Spanish-American War, one of which became the Rough Riders; Torrey served as Colonel of the 2nd regiment, known as the Rocky Mountain Riders. There are a few hotels and gas stations in Torrey, mostly along Hwy. 24.
