Chimney Rock Trail Details
The Chimney Rock Trail is a strenuous 3.6-mile loop. The trail highlights Capitol Reef's remarkable geology, both in up-close views and lovely panoramas of the Waterpocket Fold cliffs. At its outset, the trail climbs steeply alongside a fault that has split and offset the fault layers. Once atop the bluff, hikers are treated to excellent views of Chimney Rock, the western escarpment of the Waterpocket Fold, and Boulder Mountain's high plateau to the southwest. The best time to hike the trail is right before sunset, when the rocks seem to glow in the evening light. The trail offers no shade, so wear a hat and sunscreen, and carry water with you. There is a parking area, as well as restrooms at the trailhead, just inside the park boundaries on Hwy. 24 northwest of the visitor center.
